Insomnia (Sleeplessness)

One can have either no sleep or have disturbed sleep. Remember, sound, peaceful and uninterrupted sleep serves as a tonic for body and mind. Day is meant for work and night for sleep, hence one must enjoy sound sleep for 6 hours. Relaxation is no substitute for night's sleep.

Causes & Symptoms

Disturbance of any sort, mental upset, indigestion, pain, fever, restlessness, noise, late night awakening, tiring and exhausting work, acute headache, bruised feeling all over the body, sore feeling, nagging, weather changes (sudden), over or indaequate covering of the body, extreme heat or intense cold, humidity, sweating, coughing (persistent), etc are some of the factors/ situations that disturb sleep pattern.

The affected person experience constipation, headache, dyspepsia, tiredness, disinclination to work/labour, agitation etc. Absence of sleep is merely a symptom which has some cause behind it. In some cases when sleep is made subservient to and dependant upon some habit (say alcohol intake sleeping tablets, tea, coffea at bed time), the concerned person cannot have sleep unless he has his favourite drink at night.

First of all, locate the cause, and remove the same. Quite often change of place, surroundings, food habits, work pattern or hours, deviations and distractions or else involvement in fruitful and gainful work can/may induce sleep. It may be noted that resort to medicines should be the last option, when all other remedial steps have proved ineffective.

Ayurvedic Cure

Ayurvedic theory believes Vata, Pitta and Cough either all the three, two of them or only one as the causative behind insomnia, hence it should be found out as to what factor has caused the malady.

Following medicines may be tried, irrespective of any cause viz.

Churna of Pipplomool - l.5gm to be taken with water as a single dose at bed time.

Swamamakhshik Bhasma to be taken (1 gm) with jaggery at bed time.

Brahmi (Bacopa Monmera - 500mg), Vacha (Acorus Calamus - 500mg), Amla - 1 gm or more. A dose of these powders should be taken with water milk thrice daily. To make it stronger and more effective add 1 gm or 500mg of Shankhpushpi to the above mentioned powders.

Vatakulantaka (125mg) may betaken twice daily with honey.

NidrodayaRasa - 125mg to be taken with honey at bed time (one dose only).

One can try anyone of the said prescriptions as per suitability and individual requirement.

Message on head with Chameli Tel (oil of Jasmine) or pure Mustard oil (Sarson Ka Tel) or cow's ghee may also induce sleep at night.

In some cases even a bath taken 30 minutes prior to the time of retiring to bed, can also induce sleep; or else massage soles of the feet with cow's milk at night add some camphor during summer days.

If you take a long, but sustainable walk, after having dinner, and get tired, then sound sleep could also ensue.

Influenza (Flu)

What is Influenza?

Influenza is an acute, highly contagious disease caused by an RNA virus of the orthomyxoviridae family. It is commonly known as the flu or the grippe. This disease in most common in October and May. It lasts from three to five days and can be followed by fatigue for two or three weeks.

It is characterised by a runny nose, sore throat, headache, fever and aching muscles and joints. The flu is very easily spread from one person to other through infected droplets coming from infected person's coughs or sneezes. It can also be spread through direct contact with infected people.

Influenza is an illness, generally caused by viruses that infect the respiratory tract. Compared with most other viral respiratory infections, such as the common cold , influenza infection are the most serious one.

What Are The Causes Of Influenza?

The influenza is caused by three types of viruses - influenza A, B and C. Influenza types A and B are responsible for the respiratory disease that occurs almost every winter. Influenza type C usually causes a very mild disease often without symptoms.

This virus usually passes from one person to other through airborne transmission (i.e., sneezing or coughing). But, the virus can also live for a short time on objects (on which infected droplets landed) - such as door knobs, pens, pencils, keyboards, telephone receivers, and eating or drinking utensils.

Therefore, flu can also be spread through touching surfaces on which infected droplets landed or has been handled by someone infected with the virus and then touching it to your open parts like - mouth, nose, or eyes. Influenza virus may also be spread by inhaling droplets that have been coughed or sneezed out by an infected person.

Symptoms

Some people often confuse flu with a common cold - seeing the initial symptoms which are usually common in both, but flu symptoms tend to develop quickly and are more severe than the typical sneezing and stuffiness of a cold .

Influenza usually comes on suddenly and its Symptoms may include:

Fever (38° C to 40° C).

Impotence

What frigidity is to females, impotence is to males. Inability to perform sex act, or else incomplete performance (say premature ejaculation) or failure to reach orgasm are some of the symptoms that portend male impotency.

Causes

These could be either functional or organic. Impotency could either be total or partial. I would like to clear here a misplaced notion all men are not impotent to all women a man may be potent to one woman but the same man may be potent for the other woman. Fantasies play a major role here. Lithe man who is cohabitating a woman who does not measure up to his fancy or fantasied version conception of his ideal woman, he will neither feel excited, nor ejaculate. Not only that, he may not have any penile erection either. If such a person mates his wife, he is simply performing a ritual and formality, as his mind revels in some other woman, and the woman underneath him is not a woman of his choice, desire or fancy.

In sex act, every male has certain ingrained and cherished preferences which, if not agreed to by his wife, drive him to instant turn off. Same also is the case with certain women. Perversions in sex act are choiced preferences and proclivities of many men, and women are also no exception to that. When there is a clash, either partner is bound to have a Turn off, how so ever beautiful or handsome the other partner might be.

Main causes of impotency can be summed up as under:

Phimosis (Tight foreskin over the glans penis).
Vitiations of Vata, Pitta and kapha or of all the three doshas (humors).
Endocrine glands, malfunctioning and low or diminished activity of the gonads.
Locomotor ataxia, Tabes Dorsalis, Syphilis, Gonorrhoea, Tuberculosis, Diabetes.
Non-erectile power of penis.
Disjointed and disordered movements of limbs joints because of lack of coordination.
Drug-addiction, excessive use of alcohol tobacco.
Extra-marital relations or homosexuality.
Fear, ignorance, weakness of sexual organs and weak sperms.
In addition to the above factors, the foregoing factcrs may also prove causatives of impotency.

Ayurvedic Medicines

Medicines which enhance libido/sex desire are known as 'Vajikarma Aushadhis' or aphordisiacs. Drugs suggested under male sterility will also prove beneficial.

Following medicines are being mentioned with a view to enhance patient's knowledge but the physician must be consulted with regard to dosage, duration, safeguards, requisite dietary supplements and sundry guidelines.

Vanari Gutika, Madanananda Modak, Veerya starnbha Vati, Makardhwaja, chandrodaya Rasa, Apatyakar Swaras, Shukra Vallabh Rasa, Kameshwar Modak, Gokhru Pak, Chhoohara hak, Moosali Pak, Badam Pak, Kamadeva chooran, Gokhshurad Chooran, Narsigha Choorna, Madan Prakash chooran, Shatvaryadi choorna, Mritsanjeevani Sura etc.

As for diet, take high protin diet, Eggs, fish, goat's testick, meat of partridge, eges of crocodile, ghee, butter, soyabean, tomato, beets, urad-ki-dal, almond and other dry fruits, mangoes, apples, grapes, jack fruit etc.

It is reiterated that no medicine or diet should ever be taken unless advised by a physician, as over-drugging may prove counter productive and even harmful. Control on sex is needed during the treatment, otherwise all medicines could prove futile. Remember input in a vessel must exceed the output. It you spend more than what you actually earn, you will virtually turn out to be a loser, hence restraint your sexual unions until you are in a position of vantage.

Dengue Fever

Ayurvedic Name: Dandak Jwara

Other Names: Dandy fever, Three-day fever, Breakbone fever.

What's is a Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is a disease caused by one of a number of viruses. These viruses are spread by the bite of mosquitoes and are transmitted to the human body. The disease is very common in tropical and subtropical areas of the world (including some islands in the Caribbean, Mexico, most countries of South and Central America, the Pacific, Asia and parts of tropical Africa). In these locations, the dengue fever arbovirus is endemic, meaning that the dengue fever virus naturally and consistently lives in that location and the virus are not carried by mosquitoes.

Who gets Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever can occur to people of all ages. Children usually have a milder disease than adults.

What's are the causes of Dengue Fever ?

When a mosquito carrying dengue fever virus bites a healthy human, the virus travels in the blood stream and then starts multiplying itself in the whole body. Dengue fever is not contagious, which means one person cannot pass it directly to another.

Dengue fever is also a type of arbovirus, which is short for arthropod-borne virus. The main virus causing dengue fever is carried by a mosquito named "Aedes aegypti" which transmits the virus to humans through its bite. An organism that carries a disease, without actually developing the disease itself, is called a vector. Aedes aegypti works as a vector for transmitting the disease.

Ayurvedic Medicines & Home Remedies for Treatment of Bronchitis (Shwasa Pranali Shoth)

What is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is a serious variety of kasa roga, which is nothing but the inflammation of the bronchi (air passages that lie beyond the windpipe and has cartilage and mucus glands in its wall). The disease can occur at any particular time, but damp and cold climate is often the contributory cause. The disease can occur at any time and at any place, but damp and cold climate are often favourable conditions.

Causes of Bronchitis

Bronchitis is mainly caused due to certain germs, the susceptibility of certain constitutions cannot be denied. Ayurveda ascribes its onset to impairment of the digestive process, where anyone or all digestive organs could be at fault. According to the theory of ayurveda, if digestive process is cured to normal then boronchits can also be cured to normal.

Acute bronchitis is caused by certain bacteria or viruses, and is characterised by coughing, production of muco-purulent sputum, narrowing of the bronchi because of spasmodic contraction. It may also result in a rise of temperature, breathlessness, and loss of appetite.

If proper care of bronchitis is not taken and then the disease may lead to chronic bronchitis and may deteriorate into continuous breathlessness. In chronic stage, the patient coughs up enormously, secreted by enlarged bronchal mucus glands. Even broncho-dialotors cannot provide any relief in bronchospasm. When fresh air fails to reach the lungs, the patient has to exert a lot so as to ease expectoration but various spasms fail to bring up mucus. In this situation the patient's face or even whole body turns blue.

Symptoms of Bronchits

Some symptoms have been detailed earlier but most prominent symptoms include -

Inflammation of mucus membrane of the bronchi to which phlegm adheres, and a lot of difficulty is experienced by the person in expelling it.
Difficulty in expelling phlegm, and when expelled, is found to be viscid and may be purulent (full of pus).
Successive attacks of cough may turn the patient's appearance to blue look (colour).
The tendency of this viscid phlegm is to stick to the bronchi, and therefore difficulty is experienced in breathing and the lungs get starved of air.
Breathlessness (Pulmonary dyspnoea), loss of appetite and rise in temperature may ensue in acute stage of bronchitis.
Patients suffering from bronchitis are normally thin and emaciated.
A lot of coughing due to bronchitis may turn the face of the patient blue.

Some Home Remedies for Bronchitis

Some common home remedies for the treatment of bronchitis are:

Most common home remedy for bronchitis is administration of one teaspoonful of turmeric powder (haridra) can be given with a glass full of milk, twice or thrice daily. It acts best when taken early in the morning, empty stomach.

Take equal amounts of dried ginger, black pepper, and long pepper (pippali). Now powder them all and their mixture can be given thrice daily.

Even a teaspoonful of honey and ginger juice dissolved in 150 ml of hot water will cause expectoration of trapped phlegm.

Juice of vasa (Adhatoda vasica) may be taken thrice daily, in two teaspoonful doses. Two teaspoonfuls of honey taken daily are also helpful for the treatment of bronchitis.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Bronchial Asthma

Bronchial Asthma is known as Tomaka Shvasa in Ayurveda. It is an allergic condition resulting from the reaction of the body to one or more allergens and is one of the most fatal respiratory diseases. Bronchial asthma is increasing day by day with the increase in level of pollution and the stressful lifestyle followed by people.

Causes of Bronchial Asthma

Bronchial asthma is caused from the afflictions of the stomach and the gastro-intestinal tract. That is why in the preliminary stage of the disease or just before its onset, the patient complains of indigestion, constipation, or diarrhoea. The attack of asthma may come without warning because of the hypersensitivity of the patient to certain substances like pollen, dust, emanations from certain animals like dogs and cats, certain foods to which the person is allergic and, of course, certain bacteria.

Symptoms of Bronchial Asthma

Some of the main symptoms of bronchial asthma may be as follows:
The patient may have difficulty in hearing.
He may feel as a sense of tightness.
There may be some constriction around the chest.
A wheezing noise may be come as the breath is expelled.

The small bronchial tubes which connect with the lungs are compressed due to swelling or accumulation of viscous mucus in the main bronchi, hence there may be difficulty in inspiration and expiration.

The attack of bronchial asthma mainly comes on in the early morning when the patient suddenly wakes up with a feeling of apprehension and alarm. He sits up as the breathing suddenly becomes very difficult while he is lying down. He may rush to open the window to take fresh air in, as it becomes difficult to breathe in a closed room. The attack may last for a few hours or in some cases for few days before it subsides, and, in the early stages of the disease, the patient feels normal after the attack. In case of chronic asthmma the patient acquires a typical asthmatic look - a pale face and an emaciated (very thin and malnutritioned) body.

Some Ayurvedic Medicines & Prescriptions for the Treatment of Bronchial Asthma

Well-known preparations for the treatment of bronchial asthma in Ayurveda are Chyawanaprash and Agastya Rasayana. The main ingredient of the chyawanprash is amla, the richest source of Vitamin C in nature. The peculiarity of this fruit is that its vitamin content is not lost by exposure to heat as is the case with other drugs and fruits. Agastya Rasayana is used in cases of asthma where the patient is constipated; in particularly emaciated sufferers, however, Chyawanaprash is the better remedy. Both the drugs can he taken in one teaspoonful doses thrice a day, preferably before food is ingested. They are slow-acting remedies but are surer in their effectiveness. In chronic cases, their effect is evident from the increasing gap between successive attacks.

Along with the preparations mentioned above, Sitopaladi Churna should be taken thrice or four times a day in one teaspoonful doses with honey. Since the drug is likely to cause irritation in the throat, it is better to take it with honey. Medicines containing minerals which are recommended in cases of asthma are: Swasha-Kasa-Chintamani Rasa, Suvarna-Pushpasuga Rasa, and Kanalwsava. The dosage and duration of these medicines will depend upon the acuteness of the disease.

Diet and Other Regimen

The patient is advised to avoid curd, butter, milk, bananas, guavas, and fried foods. Light food should be taken at night and all sour substances should be almost banned. Smoking is contraindicated and consumption of liquor should be reduced to the minimum. Excessive physical exercise and exposure to cold and damp should he avoided.

Baldness

Baldness refers to a loss of hair, usually in the skull.

Causes and Symptoms

Some of the causes of baldness are -

Due to certain serious diseases like acute fevers, myxodema (a syndrome cause dbyhypothyroidism)
Syphilis
Intluenza
Anaemia
Great anxiety or nervous shock.
Eczema of the scalp leads to rapid baldness

Ayurvedic Home Remedies -

Collect the soft and green leaves of beetroot and boil a few in water. When the leaves become tender and soft take them out. Now grind the leaves fully to a homogeneous pulp. If water is needed, only that water should be used in which the leaves had been boiled.

Repeat the procedure in a similar way but this time replacing the beetroot leaves with henna. Now grind both the leaves together. Apply this paste over the head liberally. Allow it to dry and then wash it with lukewarm water in which a few drops of lime juice have been added. Repeat the process for one full month. It is expected that within this period hair will again start to sprout on the bald area. After doing this treatment for one full month, repeat it after every week. It is a very good remedy and many bald people have now lush growth of hair. But, as told earlier, it could be useful only when the baldness has not been due to the hereditary factor.

Rub on the scalp one teaspoon oil in which raw mangoes have been preserved for over one year. Repeat this treatment frequently.

Grind one tablespoon licorice root pieces in one cup milk with one fourth teaspoon saffron. Apply this paste on bald patches at bedtime continuously.

Grind fenugreek seeds, with water and apply on the head. Leave for at least ten minutes before washing. Do it every morning for a month.

Boil one cup mustard oil with four tablespoon henna leaves. Filter and bottle. Massage on the bald patches regularly.

Grind the remains of tobacco smoked in a hookah and add to boiling mustard oil. Cool and store.

Massage on the bald patches regularly.

If the baldness is due to any of the serious diseases, medication should start the moment the falling of the hair is noticed. A naturopathic remedy is the vigorous rubbing of the scalp with the fingers. This activates the sebaceous glands which nourish the hair and prevent its falling.
